My first Christmas in England compared with Japanese Christmas.

When I was child, the Christmas season was the most exciting time of the year.

The streets glow with lights and Christmas songs are played in many places.

I couldn’t wait to get a present from Santa Claus.

But Christmas in Japan is not very religious, and it’s not really about family.

I was amazed at how different Christmas was when I first came to England.

It’s a beautiful, joyful, holy celebration where families spend time together.  

This time, I wrote about how to spend Christmas in Japan and England.

If you are Japanese, you might be surprised at the difference in the way we spend Christmas in England!

わたしが小ちいさい頃ころ、１年でもっとも興奮こうふんしたのがクリスマスシーズンでした。

街中まちなかはイルミネーションが輝かがやき、クリスマスソングがあちこちで流ながれます。

サンタクロースからのプレゼントが待まち遠どおしくてたまりませんでした！

しかし日本のクリスマスはあまり宗教的しゅうきょうてきではなく、家族かぞくと過すごすわけではありません。

わたしがイギリスにきて、はじめてクリスマスを過ごした時ときは驚おどろきました。

家族が一緒いっしょに過ごす、美うつくしく、喜よろこびに満みちた聖せいなるお祝いわいなのです。

今回は、日本とイギリスのクリスマスの過ごし方について書かいてみました。

Christmas in Japan

Even though only 1% of Japanese population is Christian, Christmas is still a big event.

Here is how the Japanese spend their time from Christmas Eve to the day after Christmas.

日本では人口じんこうの1％しかキリスト教きょうはいませんが、クリスマスは大おおきなイベントです。

日本人にほんじんのクリスマスイヴからクリスマスの翌日よくじつまでの過すごし方かたを紹介しょうかいします。

【Christmas Eve】24th December

Japanese people in their teens and twenties spend Christmas with couples instead of spending it with their families.

In many ways, it resembles Valentine’s Day celebration in the UK, where couples have dinner and exchange gifts.

If you don’t have a girlfriend (or boyfriend), you’ll be celebrating Christmas alone, which is called “Kuri Botchi (Christmas alone)”. 

Recently, it seems to be a trend to enjoy this “Kuri Botchi”.

Watch a Netflix box sets at home, go to the hairdresser, or enjoy karaoke by yourself as I did.

１０〜２０代だいの日本人はクリスマスは家族かぞくと過すごすのではなく、カップルと過ごします。

カップルで食事しょくじをしたりプレゼントを交換こうかんしたり、イギリスのバレンタインデーに似にています。

もしあなたに彼女かのじょ／彼氏かれしがいないと、「クリぼっち」と呼よばれ1人ひとりでクリスマスを過ごすことに。

最近さいきんでは、この「クリぼっち」を楽たのしむのがトレンドになっているようです。

家いえでNetflixをみたり、美容院びよういんに行ったり、わたしがしたように1人でカラオケを楽たのしんだりします。

For Japanese families, the traditional Christmas dinner is sharing a KFC family bucket.

KFC’s sales during the 2018 Christmas period 21 December – 25 December, recording 6.9 billion yen (£50million) in five days.  That is around 10% of the company’s yearly.

You will often see long queues of people outside waiting in the street to collect Christmas KFC.

In 1974, KFC launched a marketing campaign called “Kurisumasu ni wa Kentucky” (Kentucky for Christmas.) The campaign spread across the country and became an annual event.

日本のクリスマスフードといえば・・・「ケンタッキー」

ケンタッキーは2018年ねんのクリスマスシーズン（12／21～25の5日間いつかかん）の売上うりあげが、69億円おくえんになりました。これはケンタッキーの年間売上高ねんかんうりあげだかのおよそ10％になります。

ケンタッキーのお店みせの前まえでフライドチキンが売うられ、長ながいの列れつをみることができます。

1974年、KFCは「クリスマスにはケンタッキー」というマーケティングキャンペーンを展開てんかいしました。

このキャンペーンは全国ぜんこくで広ひろまり恒例行事こうれいぎょうじとなったんです。

【After Christmas】26th December

On December 26, the Christmas tree will be taken down in preparation for the New Year.

It’s a change from Christmas decorations to New Year’s decorations, and households clean out their homes and make osechi.(New Year’s dishes)

We spend New Year’s Day with our families and have a meal together, just like Christmas in the UK.

クリスマスが終おわると、お正月しょうがつに向けてクリスマスツリーを片付かたづけてしまいます。

クリスマスのデコレーションからお正月しょうがつのデコレーションに替かわり、家を掃除したり、おせち料理りょうりを作つくります。

お正月はイギリスのクリスマスのように家族かぞくで過ごし、一緒いっしょに食事しょくじをします。

【Christmas Eve】24th December

All the shops are closed on Christmas day, so Christmas Eve is a very busy shopping day.

We also start to prepare Christmas dinner for tomorrow.

In the evening before children go to bed, They hang a big sock for Father Christmas to leave sweets and small toys for surprise in the morning.

Brandy and mince pies are left out for father Christmas (Santa Claus) and a carrot for the reindeer.

クリスマスは全すべてのお店がお休やすみになるので、イヴはショッピングの日ひです。

明日あしたのためのディナーの下したごしらえをしたりします。

子供こどもたちは夜よる、大きな靴下くつしたを吊つるし、サンタクロースのためにブランデーとミンスパイ、トナカイのために人参にんじんをおいて眠ねむります。

I spend the day with my English family opening and exchanging gifts, getting excited about the thought of eating our Christmas dinner.

【Boxing Day】26th December

The 26th is a holiday known as Boxing Day where Families all get together to carry on eating, drinking and celebrating. 

Some people prefer to go looking for a bargain sale…

While some people enjoy watching football on TV, drinking a beer and relaxing on the sofa with friends.

We all enjoy eating the leftover Christmas dinner.

26日はボクシング・デーといわれる祝日しゅくじつです。

昨日きのうに続つづいて家族かぞくみんなで集あつまって食たべたり飲のんだりお祝いわいをする日ひです。 

バーゲンセールに行ったり、のんびりテレビでサッカー観戦かんせんをしたり
