I thought it would be nice to share my recommendations with you all, so I wrote this article.
I am not good at writing English, so you may feel that there are many mistakes.

世界最大のアニメイベント「アニメエキスポ２０１９」では、３５万人以上が参加しました。
In this event, there will be a booth to introduce not only anime such as “ONE PIECE” but also minor late-night anime.
From this, you can see that Japanese anime is accepted in a wide range of genres.
このイベントには、「ONE PIECE」などの王道アニメに限らず、深夜放送のマイナーなアニメについても紹介するブースがあります。
このことからも日本のアニメは、幅広いジャンルで受け入れられているとわかりますね。
So, in this article, I am going to try to introduce you to Japanese late-night anime that is a little difficult to understand.
そこで、この記事では、理解するのが少し難しい日本の深夜アニメをご紹介してみようと思います。

First up is “Bakemonogatari”.
最初にご紹介するのは、「化物語」です。
Story Line（あらすじ）
It was made into an anime by SHAFT INC in 2009. It is based on a popular novel by Nishio Ishin.
シャフトによって２００９年にアニメ化されました。原作は西尾維新の人気小説です。
Araragi Koyomi, a high school boy from the countryside, is the main character.
田舎の男子高校生である阿良々木暦が主人公です。
He meets girls who are involved with the non-human existence of monsters and solves cases.
彼が怪異という人でない存在に関わる少女たちと出会い、事件を解決していくストーリーです。
In the anime, there are few major actions or battle scenes, and the story unfolds in a difficult conversational drama.
アニメでは、大きなアクションやバトルシーンなどは少なく、難解な会話劇でストーリーが展開されていきます。

There is the unique way of the staging that the character tilted their heads, which is called the “Shahudo(SHAFT+degree)”.Even today, there are still works that incorporate this staging.
キャラクターが首を傾げる演出が独特で、この角度は「シャフ度」と呼ばれていました。今でも、この演出を取り入れる作品が存在しています。

Pronunciation（発音）: Tore
Meaning（意味）: be fascinated with someone or something
It is a word coined by a girl named Hitagi to take the word “moe” (an otaku term for strong fondness or affection) a step further.
「萌え（強い好意や愛情を示すオタク用語）」のさらに上をいく言葉として、ひたぎという少女が生み出した言葉です。
It is a shortened version of the word “Mitoreru(be fascinated)”.
「見蕩れる」という言葉を短くしたものです。
②偽物の方が圧倒的に価値がある。そこに本物になろうという意思があるほど、偽物の方が本物より本物だ。

Pronunciation（発音）: Nisemono no hou ga attouteki ni katchi ga aru. Soko ni honmono ni narou to iu ishi ga aruhodo nisemono no hou ga honmono yori honmono da.
Meaning（意味）: Fake is by far more valuable. The more intent there is to be authentic, the more authentic the fake is than the real thing.
This line was uttered by an impostor named Kaiki Deishuu.
このセリフは、貝木泥船という詐欺師が発した言葉です。
In this scene, the values of the real and the fake are discussed, with Kaiki stating that there is preciousness in “the intension of the fake to become real” itself.
この場面では本物と偽物に対する価値観が議論されており、貝木は「偽物が本物を目指すという意思」そのものに尊さがあると述べています。
The original author, Nishio Ishin, also said that the fact that the real thing is real does not change the fact that the real thing is real, but there is value in the willingness of the fake to accept it and move closer to the real thing and even exceed it.
また、原作者の西尾維新さんも、「本物が本物である事実は変わらないが、それ受け入れて本物に近づき、さらに超えようとする偽物の意思には価値がある」と言っています。
❷Hyouka（氷菓）
The next one I will mention is “Hyouka”.
次に挙げるのは「氷菓」です。
Story Line（あらすじ）
It was made into an anime by Kyoto Animation in 2012. It is based on the novel of the same name by Yonezawa Honobu.
２０１２年に京都アニメーションがアニメ化しました。原作は米澤穂信の同名小説です。
The main character is Oreki, a high school boy who does not want to use energy for anything.
何事にもエネルギーを使いたくない省エネ主義の男子高校生「折木」が主人公です。
When he joins the classics literature club, he and the other members of the club, including “Eru”, try to solve the mystery of the classics literature club.
彼が古典部に入部したことをきっかけに部員の「える」をはじめとしたメンバーと古典部に関わる謎を解いていくストーリーです。
There is no fancy staging, it is about a student’s daily life and a small mystery.
派手な演出もなく、学生の日常と小さな謎がテーマです。
However, it is a masterpiece of Kyoto Animation with its beautiful visual effects and realistic emotional portrayal.
しかしながら、美しい映像演出とリアルな心情描写が魅力的で、京都アニメーションを代表する名作となっています。
I was watching it in real-time at the time, but I still cannot erase the recording data.
私も当時リアルタイムで視聴していましたが、いまだに録画データが消せません。
Truly a masterpiece!
本当に名作です！
Impressive Lines For You(印象的なセリフ)
- 合理的な人間は概して頭がいい。だが、それは合理的でない人間が愚かだということを示しはしない。
- ところでお前が諦めた経営的戦略眼についてだが、俺が修めるというのはどうだろう?

Pronunciation（発音）: Gouriteki na ningen wa gaishite atama ga ii. Daga, sore wa gouriteki de nai ningen ga oroka dato iu koto wo simeshi wa shinai.
Meaning（意味）: Rational people are generally smart. But that does not show that non-rational people are stupid.
This is Oreki’s line.
これは、折木のセリフです。
As for being “smart,” smart people are rational and waste-free.
「賢い」ということについてです。賢い人間は、合理的であり無駄を排除しています。
On the other hand, however, Oreki believes that valuing waste is also a wise thing to do.
しかし、反対に無駄をあえて大切にすることも賢い人間のすることであると折木は考えています。
That is a very profound word!
とっても深い言葉ですね〜
②ところでお前が諦めた経営的戦略眼についてだが、俺が修めるというのはどうだろう?

Pronunciation（発音）: Tokoro de omae ga akirameta keieiteki senryakugan ni tsuite daga, ore ga osameru to iu nowa doudarou?
Meaning（意味）: By the way, about that strategic business eye you gave up, how about I practice it?
It is a difficult line to follow at first glance, but it is actually a very exciting line.
ぱっと見難しいセリフですが、実はとても胸キュンセリフなんです。
Eru thinks about her future, whether she will be a producer of crops in her hometown or someone who can make production more efficient and enrich people.
えるが自分の将来について、故郷で作物を作る生産者になるか、生産を効率化し人々を豊かにできる人になるかを考えます。
She tells Oreki that the latter is not for her because she does not have a managerial strategic eye.
彼女は自分には経営的戦略眼が無いので後者は向いていない、と話します。
When Oreki heard that, he was going to say that he would be responsible for that part of it.
それを聞いた折木が、では自分がその部分を担うと言おうとしたのです。
That is a proposal of marriage, isn’t it!
これってプロポーズですよね！
It is a great line that shows the energy conservationist Oreki has special feelings for Eru.
省エネな折木が、えるに対し特別な感情を抱いているのがわかる、とっても素敵なセリフなんです〜
❸Penguindrum（輪るピングドラム）

Then, I chose “Penguindrum”
お次は「輪るピングドラム」です。
Story Line（あらすじ）
This is an original anime work directed and written by Kunihiko Ikuhara, who also worked on the Sailor Moon series in the 1990s. It was broadcast in 2011.
１９９０年代にセーラームーンシリーズも手掛けた幾原邦彦が監督及び脚本を担当したオリジナルアニメ作品です。２０１１年に放送されました。
It is a story about two brothers searching for something called a “Penguindrum” in order to save their sister, who has only a few days to live.
余命わずかな妹を救うため２人の兄が「ピングドラム」というものを探す話です。
The story is too complex to be described in one word, and the timeline and scenes unfold in disparate ways.
ストーリーも一言では言い表せられないほど複雑で、時系列や場面もバラバラに展開されていきます。
It is said to be based on an existed major Japanese terrorist incident.
実在した日本の大規模テロ事件を題材にしていると言われています。
Contrary to the cute character design, this is a deep story about “family and love“.
可愛らしいキャラクターデザインとは裏腹に、「家族や愛」をテーマにした深い物語です。
I also found it difficult to follow the story in the beginning, but I was crying when I watched the last episode.
私も、最初の頃は難しくて話についていけませんでしたが、最終話には号泣していました。

Pronunciation（発音）: Boku tachi wa toumei ni natte shimaundayo.
Meaning（意味）: We’re going to be invisible.
A facility appears called “Children’s Broiler” in the works.
作中で「子どもブロイラー」と呼ばれる施設が登場します。
This is where children who have been abandoned by society and are losing their minds are reached.
ここには、社会から見捨てられて心を失いつつある子どもたちがたどり着きます。
They seem to describe it as “becoming invisible” when children enter this facility and completely lose their minds.
子どもたちがこの施設に入り、完全に心を失ってしまうことを「透明になる」と表現しているようです。
Many of the main characters have deep emotional scars.
メインキャラクターたちは、心に深い傷を負っている人が多いです。
They reach the child broiler at an early age and have a being rescued experience before they “become invisible”.
彼らは幼少期に子どもブロイラーにたどり着き、透明になる前に救われる体験をしています。

Pronunciation（発音）: Boku tachi no ai mo, boku tachi no batsu mo, minna wakeaunda.
Meaning（意味）: We all should share in our love and our punishment.
This anime uses a lot of dialogue and symbolism to convey that ties of blood are only not the family.
この作品では、血のつながりだけが家族ではないということをたくさんのセリフや記号論で伝えています。
Love and punishment, I felt, refers to the positive and negative energy of the mind.
愛と罰とは、心のプラスエネルギーとマイナスエネルギーを指していると私は感じました。
I feel like I am preaching that by sharing this, we become a family and love each other.
これを分け合うことで、家族になり愛情が生まれると説いているような気がします。
We can know the work is deep, even with one line of dialogue!

❹Boogiepop Phantom（ブギーポップは笑わない）

Story Line（あらすじ）
It has been published since 1998 and is based on a light novel. The author is Kohei Kadono.
１９９８年から刊行されたライトノベルが原作です。著者は上遠野 浩平。
It was animated in 2000 and 2019.
２０００年と２０１９年にアニメ化されました。
The story unfolds from the perspectives of various characters about the mysterious events that occur in the city.
街で起こる不可解な事件について、様々な登場人物の視点で話が展開されていきます。
At a key point, Boogie Pop, who is called an urban legend, shows up to help characters out.
重要なポイントでは、都市伝説のような存在であるブギーポップが現れて助けてくれます。
The entire story does not tell us exactly who “BoogiePop” is.
物語を全て見ても「ブギーポップ」が何者であるかは、具体的に語られていません。
Everyone interprets the story differently and it is very difficult to understand.
物語の解釈も人それぞれ異なり、非常に難解です。
It has an eerie worldview like a psycho-horror, but it also has “SF battle” elements, and the original work is said to be the original light novel and had a great influence on the development of Japanese light novel culture.
サイコホラーのような不気味な世界観ですが、「SFバトル」要素もあり、原作は元祖ライトノベルとも言われて、日本のライトノベル文化の発展に大きな影響を与えた作品です。

Meaning（意味）: I’m automatic.
Boogie Pop said this line.
ブギーポップが言ったセリフです。
Boogie pop shows up when there is a major problem that is disrupting the world order.
ブギーポップが現れるのは、世界の秩序を乱す大きな問題があるときです。
He(she) does not appear of his(her) own volition, but comes out naturally when it is necessary.
自らの意志で登場している訳ではなく、必要があると自然に表に出てきます。
Therefore, he (she) states that he (she) is an automatic existence.
そのため、彼（彼女）は「自分は自動的な存在である」と述べています。
②人はみな、生きるだけの価値があることを探すために生きているのさ
Pronunciation（発音）: Hito wa mina, ikiru dake no kachi ga aru koto wo sagasu tame ni ikite irunosa.
Meaning（意味）: People all live to find something worth living for.
Here is another line from Boogie Pop.
こちらもブギーポップのセリフです。
“Why do you think humans are alive?, when Boogie Pop was asked by another character,he(she) replied with this line.
「人はなぜ生きていると思うか？」と聞かれたときに、ブギーポップはこのように答えました。
We live our lives every day with different goals and dreams, don’t we?
私たちは、様々な目標や夢を持って日々を生きていますよね。
Sometimes it does not work and we have to worry about it or give up, but if we fail, we look for the next goal or dream again.
ときにはうまく行かずに悩んだり、諦めることもありますが、失敗したらまた次の目標や夢を探します。
This is what keeps us alive every day.
これが、毎日を生きる活力になっています。
That’s a very cool line!

Lastly, I would like to introduce you to “PSYCHO-PASS”.
最後にご紹介するのは「サイコパス」です。
Story Line（あらすじ）
It is an original anime work produced by Production I.G.
Production I.Gが制作したオリジナルアニメ作品です。
It is a popular title that has been made into many movies, with the first season airing in 2012, the second season in 2014, and the third season in 2019.
２０１２年に第１期、２０１４年に第２期、２０１９年に第3期が放送され、映画化もたくさんされている人気タイトルです。
The story takes place in Japan in the year 2112 AD. A social infrastructure called the Sibyl System has been introduced to quantify and manage human personality and psychological conditions, and people are living under this management.
舞台は、西暦２１１２年の日本です。人間の性格や心理状態を数値化して管理するシビュラシステムという社会基盤が導入され、この管理下で人々が生活しています。
The anime unfolds serious aspects of the daily struggles of the Public Safety Bureau, a police organization that tries to solve cases that cannot be dealt with by this system.
このシステムでは対処しきれない事件に対して、解決に挑む警察組織「公安局」の奮闘の日々をシリアスに描いています。
The world view is so detailed that it is depicted in the future of Japan that we really think this future might be coming.
日本の未来が描かれているということで、本当にこんな未来が訪れるかもしれないと思ってしまうほど、世界観が詳細に描かれています。
Drones and robots control people, and the tools used by members of the Department of Public Safety are cool and futuristic.
ドローンやロボットが人々を制御し、公安局のメンツが使用する道具も近未来的でかっこいいです。
And speaking of this work, there is a philosophical element to it, as it unravels the question of what it means to be a human being from the inside out in a mechanical world.

Because of this, the ideas of the characters who appear as enemies are very deep and sometimes convincing.

In this world, psychological figures are considered everything, but that is not always the right society.
